Showing Off and Fractions

As week 5 swings by it’s time to take stock of the term so far, and in my opinion 4SS are beginning to thrive.  Routines are becoming second nature, iPad confidence is growing and we are starting to get a better grasp of the best uses for the iPad to ensure optimal learning is taking place.

On Wednesday I lost track of how many times I was asked “can I show my presentation\work to everyone on the screen.”  These kids are excited about their learning and I encourage you to ask them to show off their new skills at home too.

In maths, Jason has been giving the grand tour of fractions. This is a topic that makes complete sense to some students and seems like an alien language to others. Luckily, there are a number of apps out there to practice fractions including;

Fractions by Braining Camp. This free app is great for beginners to those looking for a challenge. Each fraction subtopic (there are seven) has four components (pictured below). I highly recommend this app for teachers and students (most of the braining camp apps are very good).

Pizza 1 by Brian West (pictured below). This free app is a very simple game that reinforces basic fraction understanding with the visual representation of a pizza.

Lobster Diver by Learning Games Lab. This free game uses a number line to reinforce number and fractions. It is a more challenging game that I would recommend to those looking for extension.

All these apps can be found by going to the “App Store” and typing in the name and who it is by.
