Geography and Year Ones Interact with their Local Site

Year 1 have been exploring concepts in Geography to do with their environment and talking about natural, managed and constructed features.  As a means of enhancing and consolidating their understanding, the students today went on a Scavenger Hunt using Klikaklu which was created by Mrs Brown.  Klikaklu is an app that allows for the creation of Treasure Hunts or Scavenger Hunts using the device’s camera and GPS.

With location services turned on (which we normally have to off in a school environment), the students entered the Hunt via the image below…..which was able to be searched for as soon as the device was in the geographic region.

Upon entering,  the groups of students then had to work through the locations which were given to them in photo form.  They had to make their way to this location and then let the device know they were there, upon which time they were ‘matched’ to the location and given an activity to complete as a group.

There were various activities –

  • having to sort photos of features into ‘managed, constructed and natural’,
  • videotaping their group talking about what needed to be done to the garden area to keep it well looked after (or managed),
  • identifying compass directions and positions,
  • un-jumbling sentences
  • looking at an historical image of an area of the school and making a comparison between now and then.

It was a really terrific activity – and so engaging for the students. It had them moving around, collaborating, connecting with areas of the school and their environment and working together to solve problems and quizzes.  It also gave them the opportunity to articulate and expand upon many of the understandings from the Geography unit which they have been studying.
