Oakleigh’s Young Innovator Program

We had our ThinkTank at Oakleigh State School nearly two weeks ago.  Since then, we have had our hexagons displayed in our school foyer and we have invited our community to add to the arrangements, to make connections and to discuss the way forward.

It seems likely that in Term 2, we will structure an after school program which is based on many of the ‘safe bets’ that were brainstormed during our event.   We can then spend some time and energy on the ‘darlings’ and the ‘long shots’ during Term 2 in preparation for moving into Term 3.

So, currently our ‘Young Innovator Program‘ is shaping to be able to offer a number of options for some after-school activities.   It is interesting to note that we are not going to be using the schools EV3 robotics kits in this coming term as Mr Bayliss is planning on utilising them as part of the curriculum – in Year 6 – at this time.  It is likely we will utilise these kits as part of our Young Innovator Program, later in the year.

So, we need helpers.    These helpers do not need to be geeks, nerds, engineers or coders.   Having some of these skills would be wonderful but most importantly, we need adults to help supervise and to learn alongside the students.    I would love to hear from someone who could facilitate the BYO Tech Group – someone with a diverse range of skills who has a bit of a ‘maker mentality’……and also parents who just want to get in, learn and help.

Wednesday

  1.   OSS Young Engineers – Yr 1.
  2.   Kerbel Space Program.
  3.   BYO Tech – bring your own tech, kits, gear and projects and share.

Thursday

  1. Coding – Starting with coding within Minecraft and moving to the use of online and app based options with coding
  2. Girls Tech – 3 weeks of mindset shaping and fun and moving into three weeks of coding within minecraft.
  3. Arduino and Raspberry Pi – animations and data logging.

The above is a draft and very much a work in progress.
