Scratch Jn and Junior Primary

Scratch Jn is an app version of Scratch, a coding ‘drag and drop’ project by MIT.   Below you will see a YouTube Ted talk by Mitch Resnick, the creator of Scratch.  He talks about how, when children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically – some of the ideas that underpin the Digital Technologies curriculum.

Scratch Jn, the app version of Scratch, is being introduced to students in our our Junior years at Oakleigh State School by Mrs O’Connor .   She has been introducing it to two year levels – Prep and Year 2.    It has been interesting to see the younger students using it and to witness how quickly and easily they pick it up.   The clip below has the youngest of our students being guided to use it but then ends with a Year 2 child talking about her addition game that she created.

The key focus for Digital Technologies is to enable us to support students to become creators of digital solutions.   Our Year 2 child expresses her enthusiasm for being able to ‘make things move’  to ‘make things do what she wants them to do’.    What a great foundation is being laid in our Junior years!
