Advertising in Year 6

This term in English, Year Six students are creating an advertising campaign based on the Millenium Goals. Their job is to produce a print ad using their iPads, a 15-30 second video ad and a written press release. Last week,  they were lucky to have a visit from Global Marketing Manager, Mark Ho (also one of Oakleigh’s parent community). He offered some valuable information, advice and tips.

Mr Baker was in their classroom last Friday afternoon speaking with many of the students and the teachers about their ads and there was just a ‘buzz’ of excitement around the room, where students were engaged and refining their work based on Mr Ho’s feedback and advice. They were able to explain clearly how the improvements they’ve made have enhanced their products.

This week they also started working on their video advertisement, and have been deep in discussions about story-boarding, film angles and the value of surprise.  It was great to see them getting their thoughts out on planning sheets, the wall displays and on paper spread out on the floor when I visited earlier this week.  They are using many elements of the design process as they work towards their products – including strategies designed to develop the appropriate mindset, skill set and toolset of each stage of design thinking.
