Digital Books Supporting Our ‘You Can Do It’ Program

The digital books created by our Yr 6 students to support our ‘You Can Do It’ program are being uploaded to the iBooks Store if their response to feedback has resulted in an A grade.  To attain an A grade, the student had to demonstrate a high level of understanding of the structure of a narrative and to include a clear and entertaining resolution.  They had to show an understanding of the audience by using evocative language and to include entertaining ideas whilst including one key ‘You Can Do It’ theme.  Repetition should have been used for effect along with the use of imagery  clearly articulate feelings.  Verbs, grammar and punctuation needed to support the structure and intent of the story needed to be apparent.  Finally, the design features of the book needed to show a creative and effective illustration style with a combination of digital tools.

This was an absolutely wonderful project which combined the fulfilling of the Yr 6 English curriculum with a purposeful project that had an authentic outcome.  The social and emotional program , the “You Can Do It” program is only new in our school and the students and teachers are exploring the content and themes for the first year.     This work allowed the older students to interact with the themes, to select one and then to create something truly meaningful for a younger audience which demonstrated this theme.   In creating something, not only are they reaching a deep level of understanding of the concept but also developing a sense of empathy as they try to see from the younger child’s perspective.

In publishing these books to the iBooks Store – we are connecting our young writers to a global audience which is one of the truly dynamic benefits of technology use.  Book Creator was a perfect tool for this task, allowing the students to create images using a range of drawing tools including Sketches and Paper 53.

For the beneficiaries – our younger students – how amazing for them to be able to have some literature that brings themes alive and to also see their Yr 6 school leaders as published authors.
