Discovery and Provocations

Most of our classes are currently involved in the ‘Discovery’ phase of our STEAM inquiries.  Within this phase, key curriculum areas of knowledge and understanding  are introduced to the students.  This may include the opportunity for hands on learning or provocations designed to stimulate curiosity, interest, intrigue and engagement.

Prep this week are working with talented author and illustrator Megan Forward on an activity which will stimulate their thinking on how habitats must be designed to suit the animal, Year 6 and Year 1 will work with ‘Reverse Garbage’ to design and make items from a collection of reusable materials, Year 5 will work with the Brisbane City Council’sResilient Schools’ program to look at the management of hazards within our local area and Year 2 will hear from the Disaster Relief team from Enoggera Army Barracks and discuss how to manage relief in our own area if a cyclone had caused impact around our school.

During the Discovery phase our teachers are working to support understandings by providing resources and materials that suit the curriculum area.  Problems may start to emerge and lines of inquiry may become apparent, experts may be invited along and opportunities created to create empathy.  The students are making sure they understand key concepts and the people involved.  They may start to become aware of problems and opportunities.  Their interest will be piqued and their curiosity stimulated.
