Movies, Connections and Learning@OSS

We know that human connection is so important to learning. These connections are built by ongoing and evolving relationships and experiences  and often these are a result of face-to-face contact.  At at time when the nature of the learning has to change for a period of time, it’s essential to consider the tools we have at our disposal to maintain such connections.

At Oakleigh, we are utilising our two exisiting platforms – Seesaw (P-3) and Showbie (4-6) – to support learning in this changing landscape.   When using these platforms combined with our teacher iPads and number of key creation work-flows we are able to build, curate, create and share within a digital ecosystem that will support learning as we progress into uncertain times.  One of the lovely outcomes of this work for our teachers is the way that individual creativity is able to shine through,  creating an essential ‘spark’ in the learning materials which are being shared.

Watch this video, created by an Apple Professional Learning Specialist to explore how teaching and learning materials can be created with Apple Clips.

Watch a tutorial from Rachel Minns, an Oakleigh teacher, as she demonstrates the kind of workflow our teachers are using to prepare materials.

A glance at See-Saw libraries for Oakleigh reveals the full extent of the work that is being done to support learning for Term 2.  This includes teacher creations,  explicit teaching lessons, ‘read-alouds’ of picture story-books created by our team of teacher aides, chapter readings of novels and much more:

Keynote presents another way for teachers to create engaging materials.  Watch this brief movie to learn how to do this.

The above movie clip also supports teachers to understand how the use of screen-recording can support teaching and learning in our current context. Screen recording is an in-built functionality of iPad, allowing actions and audio to be captured from the screen. Combining screen recordings with a tool like iMovie enables the creation of dynamic tutorials and home learning materials.

Below is a compilation of snippets from the work being done by our teachers in Yrs 4-6 using this functionality combined with iMovie. These teachers are working with students who are in our 1-1 BYO iPad program, with most of them being quite adept at digital work-flows.  We have created tutorials to assist students, movies to connect students with content and clips to show how to use the digital books and apps they will be using as part of their learning.

There are numerous materials to support teachers in the use of such tools:

An Apple book can be used to explore movie-making in more depth:

Teachers may also like to explore the suite of resources available within ‘Everyone Can Create’ from Apple.  The Apple Book on Movie-Making would be particularly relevant in this context.
